A loan of $3,200 helped a member to buy chickens and fabric.

Zhidmad (Cuenca) Group's story

The 'Zhidmad' community bank has eight members who all live in Zhidmad parish, Cuenca. This city is surrounded by mountains which give it a picturesque setting where people can enjoy nature. The locals maintain the traditions of their ancestors. Our members raise livestock and farm. They often do this only for their families' own consumption. Many people also go to work in the city every day. They are kind people who work hard every day in order to improve their financial stability.

One of the members of this group is Rosa Ermelinda. She is 34 years old and a single mother of four children who are 14, 12, 8 and 6 years old. Her eldest son helps her with the housework and her three younger children attend a local school. They own their own home.

Rosa Ermelinda raises cows, lambs, pigs, chickens and guinea pigs. She has also been working as a domestic for 17 years but she only works certain days. She has also been making traditional cloths for 14 years. She works irregular hours, from Sunday to Sunday.

Rosa Ermelinda has been a member of her community bank for a number of years. She is a founding member. She will invest her loan money in buying chickens and also fabric for making her cloths.

Rosa Ermelinda's goal is to continue growing her business.
