The communal bank VILLA MERCEDEZ is composed of 10 members, 8 women and 2 men. The president of the bank is Shirley, 34 years old, who with her partner has two children - 2 and 3 years of age. She has worked in the sale of meat for many years, and this loan is her first with this institution. Shirley will use this loan for the purchase of meat, and in this way increase her working capital. The reason she is asking for this loan is a lack of working capital. Shirley faces challenges in her business including competition - as there are many people who sell meat in the area where she sells - however she has many clients because of the good treatment she gives them and because she is a very friendly person. She is going to use the benefits of this loan to continue improving her business, and she wishes to be able to have a store in the market near where she lives in the longer term. Shirley is a very hardworking person and she is happy for the opportunity provided to her and her group mates, especially since in some cases they are the sole providers for their families.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
