A loan of $1,000 helped to buy provisions.

María Josefina's story

María is a member of the Nueva Amistad cooperative bank, located around the Cumbe en Cuenca parish. This is an area where the climate is cold, the terrain is hilly, and it provides beautiful landscapes for enjoying nature. Its people are dedicated to raising animals and farming, and they still retain the culture and tradition of their towns.

María is 63 years old and a widow; in her marriage, she had 6 children who are now all adults. Four of them are married and living on their own, one son works and helps her out financially, and her youngest son studies at a school in the area. The house she lives in belongs to her.

María dedicates herself to her household chores, and also raises chickens and livestock. She also farms, working her land and harvesting her crops, which she uses for both home consumption and, if there is overage, to sell. She dedicates the majority of her time tending to her store, which she has had for 40 years, working from Sunday to Sunday.

She has been a member of the cooperative bank for 10 years, and will invest her new loan into the purchase of provisions for her store.

Her goal is to expand her store.
