A loan of $850 helped to buy supplies for making tortillas, to acquire firewood to sell, and to pay for improvements to a rental apartment.

Maria Celina's story

Maria is 68 years old and a single mother with three children. She lives with one of them in the city of San Pedro Sula, Cortes.

Doña Maria has a business that generates income to support herself. She makes and sells tortillas, but she also sells firewood. Maria has been selling tortillas for 10 years and already has her own customer base. She is a well-known lady in the subdivision where she lives and has a reputation for being a hardworking woman who has dedicated her entire life to helping her children get ahead. Her children are already grown and help with some of the expenses.

Maria is an excellent client of ODEF and has received nine loans. Her current loan request, the tenth one, is for 16,000 HNL that will be invested in supplies such as cornmeal and firewood to sell as well as to use in making tortillas. Part of the loan will also be used to make improvements to an apartment she rents out as an additional source of income. This will help her improve financially. Her goal is to continue working by attending to her customers. Maria also plans to use her earnings to obtain a tortilla stand so that she can continue making improvements to her rental apartments.
