Luz Targelia's story

Luz is a woman of 67 who is married and lives with her husband in the Abrahan Calazacon parish of the Santo Domingo canton. Santo Domingo de los Colorados is one of the youngest cities in Ecuador. Now it constitutes the focal point between the mountain region and the coast. It is a privileged site, not only for its aesthetic richness but also for its unusual scenery, which can be found at the very entrance to this beautiful city. Santo Domingo de los Colorados now belongs to the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, which was recently formed. The principal holiday in Santo Domingo is celebrated with an intense influx of visitors and commercial and cultural exchanges. A great fair takes place at the Livestock Raisers Association. There the best examples of the distinct breeds and cross-breeds that are raised on the ranches of the region are exhibited and compete.

Luz has had a grocery store for 12 years. It is located near a parish sub-center for health. Her business has been growing during this time, but the lack of capital is one of the principal obstacles that she has been able to overcome. She wants to capitalize and invest in her business. She still has space on the display shelves, so she wants to buy a little more merchandise and invest in basic necessities such as rice and sugar, for which she will get a better price by buying in quantity.

In spite of having only a primary education, she has been able to advance as a micro-entrepreneur and sustain her family. In spite of her age, she strives to accomplish her dream of having a modern, stocked micro-market.
