A loan of $1,675 helped to purchase coffee plants and to work at clearing his land.

Fructuoso's story

When he was 16 years old, Fructuoso started working the plot of land that he inherited from his father. He tried out different varieties of coffee until he was able to harvest an excellent quality export coffee. Fructuoso is currently 50 years old. For the last 5 years, all of his coffee production has been organic. He sends it in to the “Unión Regional de Huatusco” (Huatusco Regional Union), an coffee producers union to which Fructuoso belongs. In his last harvest, he produced 5 tons. Based on his experience, Fructuoso knows that if he changes out some of his plants, in a span of 3 years he will be producing 8 tons. To bring this to fruition, he is requesting a loan. He needs to purchase plants, to work at clearing out his fields and to prepare the soil for planting. Fructuoso and his wife, Lucina, have 6 children. Their greatest hope for their children is to help them to get ahead and to offer them the opportunity to study at the university level, as working in the fields just keeps getting more difficult.
