A loan of $1,625 helped to buy fertilizer and seeds.

Carlos Alberto's story

Carlos, 18, is a young man who was born and has lived his entire life in the countryside. He’s married to María Mercedes with whom he has a son. They live in Tixan Parish that belongs to Alausí Canton located in the center of Ecuador. Its topography is irregular; it has subtropical valleys, moors and deep chasms through which small but torrential rivers flow. Each of its nine cantons is characterized by cultural traits, festivals and folklore. Alausí has a population descended from indigenous people, mostly from Mitimáes Coyas from the shores of Lake Titicaca.

This young man has attended and completed secondary education but has also worked in the fields with his family at the same time. His family has fields up the mountain that are used primarily to grow wheat and lentils. At present, to support his small family he wants to invest in his own crops which is why he’s requested a loan to be able to buy seeds and fertilizer so that his harvest will serve to buy what his wife and son need to live. He currently works 8 hours per day alongside his family.

Despite this being his first credit transaction, he’s considered to be a client at low-risk for default by his credit assessor. He’s optimistic because he considers himself to be “a person with the will to work” and he strongly believes that with this loan his quality of life will improve.
