A loan of $425 helped to prepare her fields and buy organic fertilizer for her coffee business.

María Teresa's story

Maria Teresa, 81, is a widow and retired teacher. She started a coffee business 40 years ago and only grows organic coffee now. Maria knows that well-shaded coffee fields don't need as much fertilizer because she learned all about farming from her parents as a child. She started her business with income from her teaching job and help from her husband and children. She wants her children to take care of the land and not pollute it with chemical fertilizers. She is a firm believer in organic farming and wants her children to continue the tradition that she started of only producing coffee of the highest quality. Maria is applying for a loan that she will use to buy organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer will allow her to increase her production without damaging her land. She also has to prepare the land for her next planting because many of her plants are old and produce little. Maria knows that the investment will help her to increase her production and, in turn, her quality of life.
