Kong S. is 40 years of age and makes 4 USD per day, buying pepper from provincial farms and reselling it at a low markup. Her husband (pictured here as she was unavailable to be photographed) works for the ministry of forestry in Kampong Cham province, earning only 2 US$ per day.

Two of their three children are already married and live outside the family home. She wants to use her loan to purchase pepper in bulk in order to increase her profits. She hopes to some day purchase a plot of land so that she can store the pepper for resale when market prices are too high.
