Luis Fernando's story

Luis is 28 years old. He lives in the town of Cartagena and he is the owner of a bread bakery. He sells baked goods made from wheat flour auch as sweet bread, cheese bread, filled pastries, pudding, etc. The bakery was opened in 2000 but was only acquired by Luis in 2006 when the prior owners sold it so they could go live with family in Barranquilla. Luis saw the opportunity and bought it with the support of his family and some savings. He also a a the base of great experience with family businesses, which he has participated in according to tradition. While he runs his business he is also studying economics courses at the university and now it is his major. His goal is to convert this business unit in a specialized source of income, putting into practice everything he has learned at the university. He wants to become a better and better businessman and a job creator. Right now he is applying for a Kiva loan which he will use to buy an oven and raw materials in a greater volume, to earn discounts and start the process of diversifying his products. He is eager to start making pita bread and diet products, which are very much in demand in hostals, hotels and in general for tourists. This is a growth sector and a great opportunity to invest and make his Kiva loan a success.
