A loan of $1,225 helped to buy more maize for resale,.

Irene's story

Irene is 38 years old and lives in the town of Mbale, in the Mbale region of Uganda. She is married and has 3 children who are all currently in school. For the past 4 years, Irene has been working hard to manage her production business, which sells dry food such as maize and beans.

To help expand her business, Irene has requested a loan of 3,000,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more maize for resale, and will help Irene to generate greater profits and increase her capital. Irene hopes that, in the future, she will be able to buy a milling machine.

Irene is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Irene who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
