A And J Group's story

In the photo are members of the “A and J” group. They are small-scale businesswomen based in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. They have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to seek for a loan of 1,200,000 Sierra Leonean Leones (SLL) in order to further expand their business.

The leader of this group is Jariatu who is pictured on the right. Jariatu is age 36; she was born in Makeni city where she is currently residing together with her husband and four children. Her husband is a businessman too and her children are attending primary and secondary schools. For many years now, Jariatu has been a businesswoman. She owns a general store. With her share of this loan, she is going to buy sugar, mints, slippers, etc., in a large quantity to add to her business.
