A loan of $1,000 helped to buy foodstuffs.

Alis Gioconda's story

Alis is a member of the “Renacer Uncovia” communal bank. She lives in Cuenca’s outskirts, a city noted for the beauty of its historic city center which blends the colonial with the modern and which led to it’s being designated a Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December, 1999. Its varied cuisine enchants the palates of locals and foreigners alike and its residents are kind, polite, warmhearted people.

Alis is 38 years old and is in a common law relationship. She has two children who are 17 and 13 years old attending a secondary school in the city. She’s also happy because she is three months’ pregnant. Her husband works as a referee. She does not own her house, she’s a renter.

Alis is from Esmeraldas Province originally and a few years ago she moved to the city of Cuenca to live by a relative and now that she’s in the city she works selling food. She has her own stand where she sells from 7 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon; she works Sunday to Sunday.

This is the third loan she’s taken in the communal bank and the new reason is to buy foodstuffs used in her meal preparation. Her dream is to own a house.
