A loan of $3,600 helped a member to purchase an oversewing machine as well as some nice quality fabric.

Sokar's Group's story

Sokar is a 25-year-old, young Iraqi wife and the mother of one child. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Sokar is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. In addition to meeting the demands of her household, Sokar has been using her skills as a source of income for the past four years.

In the past, Sokar successfully applied for, received, and repaid a Relief International - Microfinance Iraq loan, which she used to replace her old sewing machine and sewing machine table. She is now requesting a new loan to further improve her little sewing business by purchasing an oversewing machine as well as some nice quality fabric to offer something new to her customers.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients who are unable to provide a guarantor and are thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
