A loan of $2,400 helped a member to buy a new sewing machine and an oversewing machine.

Chnwr's Group's story

Chnwr is a 31-year-old, married Iraqi woman, and she is the mother of two children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Chnwr is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and to participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

For the past four years, Chnwr has been working on an old sewing machine to bring in some additional income. She has now applied for a small loan to buy a new sewing machine and an oversewing machine. The new equipment will allow her to create better-quality garments with improved opportunities to be more creative and offer variety to her customers.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients who are unable to provide a guarantor and are thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
