Liana's story

Liana is from a small village of Martvili District, West Georgia. She is 55 years old, married, and lives with her husband Avtandil and her 86-year-old mother-in-law. Liana and Avtandil run an agricultural business, which is the only source of income for the family. In particular, they have a plot of land, where 200 nut trees are grown. Avtandil sells nuts in the fall at the local open market. Along with the abovementioned, they run a small dairy farm with 3 milk cows. Liana produces on average 60 kg of traditional West-Georgian cheese and Avtandil sells it at the local open market as well. The total average monthly income of the family is 400 lari. Liana requested credit for expansion of the cattle-shed. She plans to expand the dairy farm through adding additional cows, but the existing cattle-shed doesn’t allow her to implement this plan. After the building is expanded, Liana will purchase calves and raise them. After a year she will be able to double production and sales of cheese and the income of the family will significantly increase. All members of the family will be able to improve their living conditions.
