Benkadi Group's story

The Benkadi group is composed of married women and widows who have an average age of 38, an average of 3 children and who all live in traditional family settings in the town of Barouéli, the district's main town in the Ségou region (fourth administrative region of the republic of Mali). The women got to know each other through family and neighbourly relationships, and bonds of friendship. They sell henna power, clothing, mirrors and food. The women of the Benkadi group are on their 6th group loan, having correctly repaid the 5 previous ones.

Mariam (sitting, in a blue boubou) is planning to buy 4 bags of henna powder destined for Burkina and Fana from the resellers of Barouéli. She gets the fabrics on her return from Burkina and sells them locally door-to-door in Barouéli to a clientele composed of women and men. She expects to make an average monthly profit of 110 000 francs, which will be used to meet the family's needs and to reinvest in her henna and clothing sales business.
