A loan of $2,225 helped to purchase plants and fertilizer, as well as to clean his plots of land.

Rolando's story

Rolando started working in the fields when he was little. He had his mother's support and learned from the laborers. At age 14 he took charge of the family's plots of land, starting out with an area of 1.5 hectares, and over the years he has managed to gradually acquire land so that he currently owns a total of 24 hectares. Rolando is married to Blanca, and they have three children, whom they have given the foundation they will need to work in the coffee business in the future also.
One of Rolando's main concerns is the environment, and that is why since 2001 he no longer uses herbicides to keep his plots clean. Instead, he works clearing the land and pruning, and the fertilizer he uses is organic. He also plants some trees in the plots so that they provide the coffee plants with shade, and every year he replaces the plants that are no longer in good condition, which will increase future production.
In order to carry out all of this work, he needs a loan. Some of Ronaldo and his wife's personal goals are to be able to give their children the opportunity of going to college for a degree, and to open a bakery shop in order to increase their assets.
