She gives classes in a school and also works growing beets, but now wants to grow other kinds of crops. She has three years’ experience in growing vegetables, and is supported by her husband who runs the store that they have.

Edna Magali decided to create a group and request a loan, which she plans to use to buy seeds and grow more produce (carrots, beets, radishes, cabbages, etc.). In the future she hopes that her production will increase. The remaining members of the group sell goods, work in stores or are involved in agricultural production.

La señora Edna Magali esta casada, tiene 40 años de edad, cursó su estudio como mae4stra de educación primaria, tiene 3 hijos los cuales están estudiando, se dedica a impartir curso en una escuela, como también a la siembra de remolachas pero actualmente quiere sembrar otro tipos de cultivos tiene 3 años de experiencia sembrando hortalizas, cuenta con el apoyo de su esposo quien se dedica a atender la tienda que tienen.

Decide organizar un grupo y solicitar un préstamo que lo utilizaran para la compra de semillas y tener mas cultivos, zanahorias, remolachas, rábanos, repollos, etc. Espera en el futuro tener mas produccion. Las demás integrantes se dedican al comercio, servicio de tienda y producción agrícola.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
