A loan of $775 helped to pay for labor.

Veni Mariana De Jesús's story

The members of the Estancia Vieja communal bank meet every 15 days in Estancia Vieja in the Colon parish of the city of Portoviejo. It is a place with humble people who are devoted to agriculture and general commerce.

This is where we meet Mariana, age 57. She is married, and they have two children. Both children are adults, and they still live with her. One of them is disabled. Her husband devotes himself to agriculture.

In order to help her husband with the difficult responsibility of supporting the household, our friend gets a loan for him to use with his work. He has corn and peanut crops. He needs the loan to be able to pay for the labor to harvest the crops. With this help he will be able to get by until he is able to sell for a better price.

Prices are currently very low, and the wholesale merchants are the ones who will get the earnings if he sells to them at this time. Therefore, the loan will allow him to pay and later sell. This way he will get better income for his family’s well-being. In addition to his children working with him, there are four more people whom he pays to work until they finish harvesting the crops.

This loan is to pay for labor. She has been in the communal bank almost since it began. She likes it for the ease of getting the loans.

Her dream is to have a food store.
