Every day for fifteen years, Carmen has entirely devoted herself to working at her soda fountain. She starts early to prepare everything for sale in the evening. It all started because she was unable to find work. She is trained as a social worker assistant and worked as such for fifteen years until the company she worked for went bankrupt. She tells us that before opening the soda fountain she spent some time looking for a job as a social worker’s assistant but since she did not find anything decided to work doing what she knows best, cooking. She now serves french fries and hot dogs, desserts, beverages, etc. What she most wants is to see her children grow up with a good education; thus together with her husband’s income as an electric technician almost all of their income is spent on their children’s future.

Translated from Spanish by Eliza Wethey, Kiva volunteer.
