A loan of $3,000 helped a member to purchase some high-quality fabrics and a new sewing machine.

Nermin's Group's story

Nermin is a 30-year-old Iraqi woman. She is married, and with her husband, they are raising three children.

With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Nermin is one of many women who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participating in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Nermin has been working from home for the past two years, meeting the orders of her customers. Last year, Nermin successfully applied for, received, and repaid a loan from Relief International Iraq Microfinance, which she used to purchase a small generator and a sewing machine. To further improve her opportunities and to be able to offer something new for her customers, she is now taking a new loan to purchase some high-quality fabrics and a new sewing machine. Because Nermin is 30, her loan is considered a youth loan.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients who are unable to provide a guarantor; therefore, they are unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
