Grace is a resident of Kitale, in Western Kenya, where she has been practicing mixed farming for twenty years. Her farm currently produces milk, maize, tomatoes, and vegetables, which she sells within the local markets. She says her eight children, two of whom are still school, have all been brought up with farming income.
Grace has requested a loan of 100,000 Kenya Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure two dairy cows. She says she has been eager to improve the breeds of her dairy cows and this loan will help her realize that dream. She hopes to construct a zero grazing unit in her farm.
She says that dairy animal disease remains the most challenging aspect of farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
