A loan of $1,025 helped to buy firewood.

Djelika's story

Djélika is 50 years old. She lives in a monogamous household with her husband and three children in the Kôkô neighbourhood of Koutiala (which is in the Sikasso region).

Djélika left school early, and so entered into various business activities to generate income. Having tried several business ideas without success, she finally settled on buying and selling firewood, which she has been doing for 8 years. Malian women rely on firewood for food preparation, which means that Djélika can sell three trailer-loads per month.

Djélika decided to collaborate with Soro Yiriwaso in order to solve her problem of stock shortage during the rainy season. She has already fully repaid her first loan, and this is her second. Djélika is planning to use this loan to purchase five trailer-loads of firewood in the villages surrounding Koutiala. She will then sell this wood from her home in the Kôkô neighbourhood. Her customers include both men and women, and they pay cash. With the loan, she hopes to make 125 000 FCFA per month, which she will use to pay back interest on the loan, contribute to the family's daily expenses and reinvest in her business.
