A loan of $1,100 helped to buy perfumes, crèmes, cosmetics, and clothing.

María José's story

The Communal Bank called "Umiña" meets every 15 days in the neighborhood of Umiña in the city of Manta. This place is known for its beautiful beaches, its food, and for being one of the largest ports in the country and in the Americas since it is situated on the Pacific.

It is in this place that one can meet Sra. María José. She is 22 years old, in a common-law relationship, and has a six-month-old daughter. Her husband is a merchant.

María José is studying Business Administration at a local university. She is also a hardworking young mother who always enjoys earning her own income so that she can cover the cost of her studies and the household expenses. María José sells clothing, as well as Avon and Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes, and women's accessories). She works every day by traveling all over town. She also sells to her classmates and acquaintances at the university where she studies. María José extends credit for her products and collects payment every eight days. She and her husband travel to Peru to buy her merchandise, but she also has items shipped in from the United States. María José has been in business for three years and has done very well.

This loan will be used to buy perfumes, crèmes, cosmetics, and clothing of all types and styles. María José is in her fourth loan cycle with the Communal Bank and enjoys being a member because of the help that the loans have given her. Her dream is to finish her studies and pursue her profession.
