Aileen is a mother of three children, ages 32, 22 and 12. She has been in farming for ten years and currently produces maize and beans for the local market. She is 51 years old.
Aileen has made a loan request for 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo. This is her second loan; her first loan was for 46,800 KES. She will use the loan to buy poultry birds and venture into poultry farming. Her future plans are to construct a greenhouse and farm throughout. She says improved farming income will help meet family needs, especially educating her youngest child.
She says drought has been the major challenge. She is looking for ways to harvest water during rainy seasons and to set up an irrigation system.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
