Judith is a member of the “Señor de Muruhuay de Huayaringa” communal bank composed of 7 responsible people dedicated to a variety of commercial activities. Judith, 34, has a spouse and four children and she still supports three of them.

Two years ago she opened a pub at home where she sells beverages like soft-drinks, mineral water and beer. This arose from the idea of generating profits for her home. She also comments that she works with her spouse planting and harvesting cherimoyas [custard apples].

Judith is happy because with her work and effort she’s managed to support her children’s education and improve her dwelling. In the future she’d like to open a boutique that would generate higher income, she assures.

On this occasion she asked for a loan to buy soft-drinks and mineral water to have what her customers want on hand. Judith thanks Kiva lenders for helping people like her.

Jhon attended with his spouse who is on his left.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
