A loan of $450 helped to buy clothes and summer items.

Modesta Del Carmen's story

Modesta is originally from Granada. She’s 58 years old and the mother of three children who all live on their own now. She is a grocer by profession, an activity she started 7 years ago with 100 dollars she had saved. She decided to buy snacks, sweets and other products needed for the business and this is how she gradually made her inroads into the world of commerce.

She used to be a salaried employee but earned very little. She used what she’d get paid to feed and school her children because she became a single mother and had to struggle to raise her family. This is when she decided to open a grocery store, a business her oldest son helps her with. She also relies on other income she gets when sometimes she receives money shipments from a son who is abroad but this isn’t something she gets on a regular basis.

She’s taking out the loan to buy merchandise like clothes and summer items because this loan will help her increase demand in products customers have been requesting. As future plans she hopes to leave the business well-established so that she can leave it to her youngest son. Her next goal is to remodel her house with profits generated from the business.
