A loan of $4,800 helped a member to renew her sewing work area.

Shler's Group's story

Shler is a 39-year-old Iraqi woman, married, and a mother of six children.

Learning to sew at a young age, Shler has 27 years of experience behind the sewing machine and has been successfully meeting the requests of her customers, working from home while also taking care of her household and family.

In the past Shler successfully applied for, received, and repaid a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq, which she used to purchase a small generator allowing her to work even during the hours of the day the city's power was out. She also bought some fabric and tools for her work.

With the previous loan she was able to make improvements benefiting her customers, and with a new loan Shler will concentrate more on making some improvements she can also benefit from. She would like to renew her work area, making the conditions of her work more pleasant.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor, thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
