A loan helped a member to replace her sewing machine and also to buy a small generator.

Shoxan's Group's story

Shoxan is a 27 year old, married, Iraqi woman. She has been working from home for the past 5 years using her sewing skills to contribute to the family's monthly income.

In the past, Shoxan successfully applied for, received and repaid a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq. She used the previous loan to purchase an embroidery machine, an overlock machine and an iron. Shoxan now is taking a loan to make further improvements to her little sewing business. This time she is planning to replace her sewing machine and also to buy a small generator, which will allow her to better manage her time and work even during the hours when the city's power supply is out.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

In this group: Shoxan, Mihraban, Aftaw
