A loan of $3,600 helped a member to buy an overlock machine and a small generator and heater for work area.

Shima's Group's story

Shima is a 29-year-old Iraqi wife and a mother of two children. Working from her home, she has been using her sewing skills for the past two years to work on custom orders and help support her family with the additional income she can bring in through the work. Shima took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq to buy an overlock machine and a small generator and heater for her work area, hoping to improve both her work conditions and the services she can offer to her customers. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients unable to provide a guarantor, thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
