A loan of $5,400 helped a member to buy a new sewing machine and a small generator, as well as some fabric and raw materials.

Mariam's Group's story

Mariam is 44 years old, an Iraqi mother of three children. Six years ago, Mariam started to work from home, using her sewing skills to help with the family finances, and bring in some additional income. Previously, Mariam has successfully applied for, received and repaid a loan taken from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq, which she used to improve her work area and purchase an iron. Now, Mariam has taken a new loan to further enhance her sewing and tailoring work. She would like to buy a new sewing machine and a small generator, as well as some fabric and raw materials. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
