A loan of $775 helped to buy dyes, nail polish, brushes, scissors, etc.

Shirley Maribel's story

The Virgen Del Mar communal bank meets every two weeks in the beautiful resort of San Mateo in the city of Manta, known for its beautiful beaches that are very popular year-round with tourists from around the country and abroad. In this place, the majority of the inhabitants fish and make their living from the sea. In this place lives Shirley, 23 years old. She has been in a common-law marriage for a short time, and still has no children, but she hopes to have a baby very soon. Her husband is a fisherman. She learned beauty at an academy in the town some years ago, since she has always liked to earn something of her own. This is why, using what she learned at the beauty academy, she currently does personal appearance and beauty work. She works in her home as well as in her customers' homes, and she does a variety of jobs such as haircuts, hair dyeing, and painting nails, among others. She tells us that her customers call her on the telephone and later she visits them to do the work that they need. She has been doing this work for more than 5 years, and it is going very well for her. She is going to use this loan to buy dyes, nail polish, and certain tools that she still needs such as brushes, scissors, and other products. She has been in the communal bank for four years, and she likes it because the interest rates are low compared to the other banks. Her dream is to one day have a great beauty salon.
