A loan of $3,000 helped a member to purchase a small generator, an overlock machine and an iron stand.

Heba's Group's story

Heba is a 20-year-old Iraqi woman. She is married and has one child. For the past two years, she has been using her sewing skills to work from home. She fills sewing and tailoring orders to bring in some extra income for her new family.

In the past, Heba took out a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq to refurbish her work area to improve her work conditions. Now Heba has a loan to further enhance her sewing business opportunities. With the loan, she plans to purchase a small generator, an overlock sewing machine and an iron stand, hoping she will be able to provide her customers with better quality service.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
