A loan of $4,500 helped a member to replace her old sewing machine, purchase an oversewing machine, fabric and raw materials.

Dlnya's Group's story

Dlnya is a 30-year-old Iraqi woman, and a mother of two children. As a young mother and wife, working from home, she has been using her sewing skills for the past 5 years to contribute to the family's monthly income by making custom-ordered dresses and other small household items. Dlnya took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq to improve her sewing business by replacing her old sewing machine and purchasing an oversewing machine as well as some fabric and raw materials. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group. Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
