A loan of $650 helped a member to buy house-building materials including cement, iron, and corrugated zinc for the construction of a dwelling house and invest the rest of the loan in business.

Angel Alpha's Group's story

Pictured here are teachers at a primary school in Fadugu, a small town near Kabala town, in northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a group loan that will help them to solve certain financial challenges that their salaries alone cannot solve. At the end of each month, they will repay SMT/Kiva lenders with deductions from their monthly salaries made by their bursar, who is directly responsible for making the repayments on their behalf.

The leader of this group is Angel, a native of Kamabai village, near Kabala. The 50-year-old is married to a businesswoman, and the couple has two children, one of whom is attending primary school. A teacher for 30 years now, Angel has requested this loan, part of which will be used to buy house-building materials such as cement, iron, and corrugated zinc for the construction of a dwelling house, with the remainder to be invested in business.
