A loan of $1,925 helped a member to pay school fees for his children.

Salifu S.'s Group's story

These are teachers of a primary school in Kabala town. Teachers of this noble institution have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan of 8,400,000 Sierra Leonean Leones (SLL) for the entire group. With the help of this loan, this group of teachers will be able to improve on their standard of living.

Salifu is the leader of this group of teachers. Salifu was born in Falaba, a village near Kabala town. He is forty-eight years old and married to a businesswoman. Salifu has three children who are attending primary and secondary schools. He has been a teacher for twenty-five years. He has requested this loan in order to pay school fees for his children.

School staff from this institution, like many other school staff within SMT’s operational areas, come to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish some certain tasks that they would otherwise have not being able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.
