A loan of $750 helped to buy seeds and fertilizer for his cocoa bean crops.

Guido Ulbio's story

Guido is a 46 year old man living with his family (he has two children) in San Miguel de los Bancos, one of the nine cantons in Pichincha Province where Ecuador’s capital is found. It has 52 populated centers among communities, hamlets and cooperatives distributed along the entire canton. Within the canton’s boundaries is found an important natural resource: the Mindo Nambillo Ecological Reserve, a large surface area in the canton full of grasslands since the canton’s main activity is cattle raising. It also has palmetto, sugarcane, banana, ‘naranjilla’ [small green orange used in making a conserve] and cocoa beans in small tracts. For some years now Guido has been growing cocoa beans to sell. This activity has helped him support his family and give them a modest life. Guido wants to improve his crops buying more seeds (to increase planted surface area), fertilizer and better quality supplies in order to earn higher income and with it attain a better quality of life. Despite having many obstacles in his life, he did not want to talk about them. He comments that he’s currently living normally. He hopes to give his children everything they need to develop in a healthy environment where all their needs are met.
