A loan of $5,550 helped a member to pay school fees for his children.

Chernor's Group's story

Pictured here are primary school teachers from the village of Magbass, in Northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a loan in order to solve their immediate financial challenges – some will use their share of the loan to buy a piece of land, others to build a family dwelling, and some will invest in a business, pay school fees for their children, etc. And at the end of each month, they will repay the loan using their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for doing the deductions and making the repayments on their behalf.

Chernor is the leader of this group of teachers. The 49-year-old is a native of Magbass village. He is married to a housewife, and the couple has seven children, all of whom are in school. Chernor has been a professional teacher for 25 years now. With his share of this loan, he is going to pay the school fees for his children.
