A loan of $650 helped to buy a new sewing machine.

Emilse's story

Emilce, 50, has a dressmaking shop in Puerto Colombia, very close to the sea, where she lives with her three daughters, 9, 16 and 21. She has had the shop since she got her first sewing machine 20 years ago and began to make dresses, blouses and skirts for her friends. Gradually her market began to grow and with it, the possibility of selling other products such as shoes, perfumes, and casual clothing to generate more income and help with the welfare of her household. She is currently applying for a Kiva loan, her second financing with the Mario Santo Domingo Foundation. She has been a member of this organization for a year and with it has succeeded in having working capital to cover new orders and to earn a little more. She will use the Kiva loan to buy a new sewing machine because she needs to increase her productivity and to improve the quality of her clothing. This is because she wants to get involved with more structured markets. Her goal for the future is to expand her business, adaptaing her infrastructure of sewing machines and succeed with the incorporation of workers who help her production and are able to earn for themselves as well.
