Las Artesanas Del Fresno Group's story

The “Las Artesanas del Fresno” (The Ash Tree Artisans) group is located in Fresno Nichi a place where trees predominate. It’s composed of nine women who are all embroidery craftswomen. The group is called Las Artesanas del Fresno precisely because of the activity they carry out and ‘fresno’ because of the place they live in.

Rufina, 52, has been married to Santiago, who works as a laborer and farmer, for 32 years; they still have a little boy, Aron Santiago, who depends on them and is attending elementary school.

Rufina is an embroiderer and she mentions that she’s been doing this for 32 years; she embroiders bedspreads, ponchos, shawls, "quexquemetl" [embroidered lace cape], mats with figures representative of the community such as braided stars, embroidered little houses, horses and other little animals. With the granted loan, Rufina will buy wool fabric, embroidery fabric, Madeja-style yarn, needles, scissors, etc.

One of Rufina’s greatest difficulties is that their type of crafts hardly sell anymore because people don’t want to pay the prices quoted to customers; they think they are too expensive and often their work is undervalued. Rufina relates that it takes from 20 days to a month depending on the item to be made to complete said items.

The loan that FRAC and Kiva will provide for the Las Artesanas del Fresno group is of great help for them because often they are unable to buy the materials they need to make their items. Because of this, they are very grateful for the loan granted that the entire group will invest: Angelina, Maria Juana, Lucina, Maria de los Angeles, Leonila, Maria and Lucina will invest in their artisanal embroidery work and Maria Iris in beauty products.

In this group: Angelina, Leonila, Lucia, Gregoria, Rufina, Juna Iris, Maria De Los Angeles Manuela, Maria Juana, Maria Lucina
