A loan of $325 helped a member to buy more essential commodities for resale.

Oliver's Group's story

Oliver's group is comprised of 3 hard working women. Oliver is 21 years old and lives in the town of Kasese in the Fortpotal region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past 2 years, Oliver has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells sugar and soap. To help expand her business, Oliver has requested a loan of 300,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more essential commodities for resale and will help Oliver to generate greater profits and cover her medical expenses. Oliver hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land. Oliver is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Oliver's future prospects by showing her to how to save her money.
