A loan of $1,650 helped to buy oil, bananas, peanuts and other food products.

Osveida's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Nueva Generación' community bank meet in a place known as Los Arenales, in Crucita parish, in Portoviejo canton. This place is well known for its beautiful beaches, its cuisine and the warmth of its people.

This is where we meet Osveida. Osveida is 65 years old and the single mother of 12 children who are all now grown up. Three of her children are still single and live with her.

In order to earn a living and provide for her children since the loss of her husband, Osveida has been running a business for some years. She set up a small cafe in her home because many tourists come to her town. There she sells empanadas, corviches, soda, juice and other drinks. On weekends, she also prepares and sells delicious 'ceviche' (a marinated fish dish) which is very popular with the tourists who come here. She works from Wednesday to Sunday, from 8.00am to 3.00pm. She has more than 15 years experience in her business and, thanks to God, it is doing very well.

Osveida will use this loan to buy oil, bananas, peanuts and other ingredients that she needs for preparing her food. She is a founding member of her community bank and she likes it because of the benefits the bank offers. Her dream is to own a great restaurant.
