The "Mujeres Unidas" communal bank was created by bringing together several neighbors in the city of Mariano Roque Alonso. All the members have formed a group that is very close-knit and able to jointly carry out activities that strengthen their partnership. They are very hard-working individuals, eager to improve themselves.

Maria is one of the group members. She is married, and tells us that she and her husband support their two children, who are the reason why they both work very hard. She is very satisfied with her business, and with the training that the group receives.

She is applying for the loan, because she wishes to supply her grocery store, as she doesn't want to lose any customers. She wishes to buy dairy products, baked goods, vegetables, fruit, and other basic household products. The group is very happy about the help they receive.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
