A loan of $1,100 helped to finish building a house to rent out.

Lucía Otilia's story

Lucía is a 55-year-old woman. She is single and the mother of six children. She lives in Chillogallo parish, in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. This is a densely-populated sector in the south of the city. Here there are several very busy places such as the markets, shopping malls and even one of the capital's two [land] transport terminals. This woman has been working for years raising and selling chickens. She slaughters the animals herself and sells them in her local market. Lucía has found it very hard to raise her six children on her own and it has involved a lot of sacrifice. However, she has known how to get ahead and has even gradually been building a house which she plans to rent out so that she can increase her income and continue supporting and educating her children. With this goal in mind, Lucía needs her second loan from Fundación Alternativa (the intermediary institution which works between her and the Kiva program). Lucía was very punctual in making her repayments on her first loan and so she is considered to be a good client. Lucía will not only receive the money that she needs to achieve her goal but Fundación Alternativa will also provide her with training and advice so that she can improve her quality of life and grow as a businesswoman.
