The Unity Group's story

In the photo are members of the “Unity” group. They are small-scale businesswomen based in Koidu, a city in Eastern Sierra Leone. This is the first loan these entrepreneurs are accessing from SMT/Kiva lenders. With this loan, they will be able to expand their businesses, make more profit and consequently improve their standards of living.

The leader of this group is Issatu. Issatu is 34.She was born in Tankoro-Kono. She is married to a businessman and the couple has three children – one in primary school and two in secondary school.

Issatu has been a businesswoman for seven years now. She sells cooked rice. She has requested this loan in order to buy a larger quantity of cooking ingredients – rice, palm-oil, salt, pepper, tomatoes, onions, etc. In this way, Issatu will be able to cook a large amount of rice to meet her customers’ growing demand.
