Juntos Podemos Confluencia Group's story

This communal bank called “Juntos Podemos Confluencia” [Together We Can Find Common Ground], comprises 17 entrepreneurs who do different types of activities, among which are providing music for events, selling clothing, selling cosmetics from catalogs, running grocery stores, and preparing fast foods. All of them live in the city of Chillán.

Margarita, a member of the communal bank, is the first person on the left in the photo. Her hair is dark brown, and she wears it up. She is wearing a black shirt and beige pants. She is also waving her right hand.

For 4 years she has managed a soda fountain, which her husband built. He works in construction. She is only there on the weekends from 11 am until 11 pm continuously, since usually Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days, especially at the end of the month (paydays for her customers). She normally buys her merchandise once or twice a week from distributors and wholesale supermarkets in Chillán. With this loan, she will buy steaks, hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, bread, tomatoes, avocados, mayonnaise, ketchup and a gallon of gas. One of her goals is to convert her soda fountain into a restaurant or eatery, where she could offer a wider variety of prepared foods. She also says she needs a potato fryer.

Margarita lives with her husband and two girls, who are 6 and 2 years old. Her oldest daughter attends high school. She is very happy and grateful for the opportunity offered by Fondo Esperanza. This investment would allow her to sell much more. With respect to her communal bank, she says she feels very comfortable and pleased to be a member.

Chillán is a town in south-central Chile. Its name means “seat of the sun” in mapudungun, the language of our indigenous mapuches. Chillán is known as “Cradle of the Homeland” or “Land of Artists” because it has been the birthplace of distinguished people like, for example, the well-known pianist Claudio Arrau.
