A loan of $750 helped purchase 3 bags of green pea seeds plus sacks of fertilizers.

Nicanor's story

Nicanor is 57 years old and married with Natividad, the mother of their 9 children. Only 4 still live with them; the remainder are independent and now have families of their own. His family lives together in their own house, located in the annex of Yanama in the Palca district of Tarma. For more than 30 years, Nicanor has been farming. He learned the trade from his parents. Thanks to his skill in agricultural work, he managed to acquire his own fields. “I sow potatoes, green peas, 'olluco' [an Incan tuber, like potatoes], lettuce, carrots, and gladiolas, everything, because in this manner, I have income to cover expenses all year,” he commented confidently.

Nicanor sells his harvests almost all year round -- this is the advantage of planting constantly. He transports his harvests to the wholesale market in the city of Tarma. During the months of January, February, and March, potatoes are in great demand in the city of Lima and Nicanor travels there frequently. The same occurs in May and November, when he sells gladiolas.

Nicanor raises cattle as well. Thanks to his milk cows, he also makes cheeses and sells milk. He is content to live in the countryside, despite the cold and the intense rains that make his work difficult.

This is his 8th loan through MFP, and Nicanor assures us that the monthly payments will be made punctually. He awaits this help in order to achieve his objectives. Nicanor belongs to “Los Manantiales de [The Fountains of] Yanama” communal bank. He is very satisfied to work with such responsible and supportive people. He will invest the money in purchasing 3 bags of green pea seeds; the remainder will be used to acquire fertilizers.
