Por Un Futuro Mejor (Paute) Group's story

The 'Por un Futuro Mejor' community bank is made up of 10 women and 1 man who work every day in different business activities that allow them to cover their household expenses and provide for their families.

Our members, in common with everybody else in Paute, are noted for the fact that they maintain the culture and traditions of their ancestors. They live in Paute canton which is in the north-east of Azuay province. This area has a sub-tropical temperate climate and is surrounded by many hills. Most of the workers in this area are employed in agriculture and this is complemented with some small-scale livestock raising. In Paute there are some companies whose business is exporting flowers. Other sources of work are liquor production and furniture making. The Chicán embroiderers are very well known and there are a few places to visit.

One of the members of this group is Ruth. Ruth is 33 years old, married, and has two children from her marriage who are 7 and 5 years old. They are attending an elementary school in the town. Her husband is a private employee and they own their own home.

Ruth has been running a stationery store for eight years. She works from Sunday to Sunday, from 8 in the morning until 8 at night.

This is Ruth's first loan through her community bank which she was invited to join by a friend. She will invest her loan money in buying stationery products and school supplies for her business.

Ruth's goal is to expand her business and provide for her family.
