'Jade' is a group of organized neighbors who all live in the same block and that have all known each other for approximately 10 years. Their meetings are located in the municipality of Monterrey, N.L.

Maria is one of the members of the 'Jade' group. She is a very hard working woman and is 44 years old. She has two children, a 5 year old boy who is in kindergarten and a teenage girl who is 18 years old and works in a small clothing store. Maria has been a merchant in mobile markets for the past 5 years. She told us that her business began when her sister gave her a large amount of clothing and toys. But because it gave her shame to go out and sell, her daughter was the one who started selling. After some time she got comfortable with the idea and with the help of a loan she increased her sales and started to sell beauty products, jewelry, corn on the cob and 'frituras' (a fried snack food) as well. Maria wants to restock her merchandise and to buy a small cart to be able to sell corn on the cob from, so that she isn't limited to only selling outside of her home, but can also go to different neighborhoods. In the future, with her profits, she wants to improve her house and buy a car.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
